Photo Capturing Tips & Editing Part 1

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

Photo Capturing Tips

So today I've decided to write a Blog Post centered around Photo Capturing Tips and photo editing which will hopefully help anyone looking for some photography advice!

Starting with...

Exposure

Exposure =Light in simple terms and can be a photographer's best friend but it can also be their enemy, If you don't have the right settings on your camera then you could easily miss out on loads of key moments especially when capturing photos in direct sunlight without a lens hood.

ISO Speed

So your ISO Speed is directly related to exposure, so make sure you set it correctly or your photographs will just turn out as white blurred screens. In shorter terms, ISO Speed controls the sensitivity of your camera's sensor to a given amount of light.

Aperture

Aperture controls the area on your camera that light is let through which is a fancy way of talking about depth of field.

Shutter Speed

The Shutter Speed controls how long the exposure is allowed to take affect, which basically means the faster the shutter Speed the darker the image vi's versa

All these settings together make up your overall exposure so make sure to do some research and learn how they all work and what the correct settings are to use in whichever scenario your In!

Those tips are all based around your actual camera capture settings while below are some editing tips for photo editing tips.

If you capture and image and its come out darker then you'd like, your best friend will be specific photo editing apps that allow you to edit the light levels! On great apps the selection of light levels should include these settings which are Photo Capturing Tips -

  • Exposure

  • Contrast

  • Highlights

  • Shadows

  • Blacks

  • Whites

All these settings can really transform any image from something mediocre to a stunning image! I'll now go through and explain what each of these mean and what effect they have on your images.

Exposure

Put simply, exposure is how Light or Dark an image appears, and when editing with this setting it usually brightens your image, while dark usually makes your image appear darker and sometimes this can be a great option for adding some atmosphere to your images. To much or to little of each of these options can ruin an image so be careful!

Contrast

When referring to contrast, it refers to the difference between the light pixels and the dark pixels of an image. So low contrast photos will contain a narrow range of colours (more bland and less vibrant) while high contrast images have bright highlights (brighter and more vibrant) with darker shadows. So changing the contrast of a photo will either make an image more vivid or can dull the tones subduing the photo giving it a less in-your face appearance.

Highlights

In simple terms, Highlights are the lightest elements of an image. So the Dynamic range is the ratio between those vivid highlights and dark shadows, from bright higher exposed white to pure jet black. This range is key to an photos depth and the amount of drama you'd like to impose.

Shadows

Shadows are the darkest areas. of an image so like Highlights the Dynamic range is the ratio between those vivid highlights and dark shadows, from bright whites to dark blacks.

Whites

Yes self explanatory, Whites are the white, brighter pixels (sometimes the vivid colours).

Last but not least….

Blacks

Another self explanatory setting, Blacks are the Darker pixels of an image (less vibrant colours of an image).

All these light settings can really change the look and feel of an image! So I highly, highly recommend downloading a free photo editing app to start with and messing around with the light settings, you'll be surprised by the difference. I've included an example of my Light editing below. (which is one of the many Editing Services I sell on my site)
